Why the city lights up
Dev Deepawali is celebrated on Kartik Purnima. Earthen lamps illuminate the ghats and the riverfront becomes the setting for prayer and celebration. It is a different occasion from Diwali, with its own place in the city’s traditions.
Plan your stay before your evening
Choose where you want to spend time, then look at the route from your accommodation. A stay near your chosen ghat may make the evening simpler; a quieter residential home can offer a welcome change of pace afterwards. Leave room in your itinerary for both.
Confirm the festival date and programme before making plans. Arrange your stay and onward travel ahead, and agree a meeting point with everyone in your group.
Choose how to see the riverfront
A walk on the ghats lets you stop and watch the preparations. A boat offers another perspective from the water. If you choose a boat, discuss the route, duration, boarding point and full price with the operator before you go. River conditions and local arrangements can affect what is possible on the day.
Decide how much walking feels comfortable for your group. Allow extra time to reach the river and return, and follow the access routes in use that evening. You do not need to see every ghat to enjoy the occasion.
Leave space for the next morning
Keep the following morning easy: breakfast, a short walk, perhaps a temple visit if it fits your plans. Banaras has plenty to offer after the lights of the festival, and a slower day is a good way to take it in.
